Sutherland gateway to the stars

As most of the members here know, myself and Ciro recently took a trip up-country to take in some of the scenery around Sutherland and do some stargazing.

We have always been fortunate enough to land up in some of the better places to stay on our journeys and so, while on the Sutherland trip we latched on to the idea of logging a few of our travels with an idea of passing on any usefull information to others.

Places to visit in Sutherland:

  • The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) at the observatory.
  • Salpeterkop - the last active volcano south of the equator.
  • The Louw Museum - birthplace to poets NP Van Wyk and WEG Louw.
  • Dutch Reformed Church - built in 1898 and bearing testament to the Anglo-Boer War.
  • Tuinplaas Church - en route to Sutherland and one of the 3 oldest churches still in service in the country.
  • English and Jewish cemeteries - here you will find the graves of an English soldier (He was buried twice!).
  • Ouberg Pass - with views of the Cederberg, this is not for the faint hearted!(about 200km away) and the Karoo valley (a thousand metres below).

A new section is in the pipeline so feel free to send any info pics details and thoughts and help us add to the traveling experience of other members of our community.
